Blog #77 – BEING A LEADER

Inherent in being a teacher, a coach, or a parent is the expectation that I be a leader. As such, I take my responsibility of being a leader seriously. As a leader I work diligently in leading by example. I am always trying my best to be a good example for everyone. I think carefully before I speak, and I work at making informed decisions before acting.

As a teacher, I want to inspire a love of learning in general and a love of mathematics in particular. I treat every student as an individual and with respect. I am committed to helping maximize each student’s performance. I model how to solve mathematics problems. I am constantly inviting each student to join me in a journey of discovery. I make sure that students understand that I want them to be active participants in the learning process. My discipline style makes sure that students do not feel threatened. I work at making sure that I always try to diffuse situations of conflict.

As a mathematics coach, I encourage each student to follow two simple rules. Each student is asked to participate as long as they enjoy what they are doing. I also want each student to realize that all that is expected is that they try to their best. As a leader of the team, I want every member to know that competing is not about winning. My plan for success focuses on each student improving their performance in any of the contests that they participate in (Number Sense, Calculator Applications and Mathematics). I assist each student in developing their individual plan for success. As each student works on individual goals, they are informed that they are contributing to team goals.

As a parent, I used all of the leadership qualities that I used as a teacher and as a mathematics coach. My children know that I have their best interests at heart. I have always worked at being a good role model. I have encouraged my students and children to communicate what they are thinking and feeling. I try to demonstrate behavior that illustrates how much I want to help people. I have encouraged each of my children to be assertive. I have told them that they need to be responsible for their actions. Each of my children know that I will always love them. From what I have seen in their relationships with others, I know that each has become a good role model. Each has demonstrated leadership skills that have brought success in their lives.
